"Licensed Number of Users Exceeded" Error with Windows 95

Several customers have experienced the following problem with Windows 95 when using a network adapter manufactured by Invisible Software.

Problem Description

The computer has a network adapter manufactured by Invisible Software. (In other words, the computer is running Adapter Dependent software.) But when Windows 95 starts, there is an error message from TransBIOS saying "3080: Licensed number of users exceeded".

Explanation

The problem occurs if Adapter Independent software was previously installed on the computer.

When you install Adapter Independent Invisible LAN software, the software's serial number is stored in the Windows registry. If you later switch to Adapter Dependent software, the old serial number remains in the registry. This prevents TransBIOS from seeing the serial number that is built-in to the network adapter, causing the error.

Solution

To solve this problem, you must remove the old Adapter Independent serial number from the registry. To do this, take the following steps:

  1. Click Start, then Run.

  2. Type REGEDIT and click OK.

  3. You should see a window with two panels, one on the left and one on the right.

  4. In the left panel, click on the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

  5. In the left panel, click on the plus sign next to SOFTWARE.

  6. In the left panel, click on the plus sign next to InvisibleSoftware.

  7. In the left panel, click on TransBIOS.

  8. In the right panel, right-click on SerialDat, and then choose Delete from the pop-up menu.

  9. When Windows asks you to confirm the delete operation, click Yes.

  10. Close the REGEDIT program.

  11. Restart Windows 95.
